Advice on time zones and camera clock setting

I have been using HoudahGeo to geotag photos taken in my home time zone (GMT) for around 6 months, and it is a great application. I am planning a 3 week trip to South America this winter and plan to take my AMOD GPS tracker along with my camera. I see that there are quite a few posts related to time zones, and I would like to confirm that I understand my options before I depart.

I understand that the GPS unit records the tracks using GPS time, which is effectively GMT (plus around 15 seconds). If I set my camera clock to GMT, then I have no issues with geotagging as the photos and the GPS data will be recorded in the same time zone. However, the time (and possibly date) recorded in the photo metadata will not reflect the local time (and date) when the photo was taken.

I would prefer to have the timestamps in the photos in local time to reflect when they were actually taken. I understand that I need to set a single timezone for a whole project.

If I do set my camera clock to the local time zone where I am photographing, in order to successfully geotag my photos, is it as simple as setting the correct timezone (e.g. GMT -4) during the import of the photos to HoudahGeo?
If the above is correct, what time will be displayed on the geotagged photos when their EXIF data is updated - will they retain the original camera time (i.e. local) or will this be updated to GMT? Is the time zone adjustment during import to HoudahGeo only applied during the tagging process?

Feature Requests - Clickable wherefroms and some new print options

When the inspector window is brought up, would it be possible to make the URL of the 'wherefrom' field into a clickable link?

Handy if I want to show someone else where I got a document from, and shouldn't be too difficult to implement in the tableview.

Also, would it be possible to produce some print options for results?

For my work I have to keep a log of all self-directed learning for the previous year, and it would be great to be able to produce a pdf or printout of thumbnails of search results, perhaps along with some of the 'mdls' fields.

Which files will HoudahSpot Find

Sorry, but I couldn't find this very basic information:

Does HoudahSpot take the Spotlight results and allow you to customize the results?

Or can it find files that Spotlight can't? For example:

Somewhere in the not too distant past, "Find File" in the Finder could find text in Microsoft Works 1, 2, 3 & 4, WordPerfect and even AOL e-mails files that were saved outside of their PFC. I think that ability went away in 10.4 (or maybe before, but was there for sure in 9.1).

In my business, files that go back 20 years, or more, need to be viewed, and the old finder made them easy to find.

Can I use HoudahSpot to find them?

[Req] Search feature when geocoding with Google Maps

Hi,

Could you please consider adding search capabilities to the Google Maps geocoding. I find myself spending too much time manually scrolling to the location, when I could have searched much faster (esp. when this is an address Google would locate precisely). This is okay in Google Earth because you can search there, get the HoudahGeo cursor to the proper location, and then geotag with HoudahGeo - but since the Google Maps object is integrated in HoudahGeo there is no such option in this case.

I hope this is clear enough, and I would love seeing this implemented - shouldn't be too hard, no?

Adding direction

Text under images

Aperture access with v. 2.3.4

Tested the new version 2.3.4. Following observations were made:

- opened an image in my Aperture lib via the HoudahGeo media browser

- no access to the originals

- only the previews are available

- therefore no geocoding possible, since the refresh of the meta data from the original cannot find geo metadata (previews are tagged)

See the attached screenshot from the information/inspector panel.

Update:

Double checked that issue with v. 2.3.3. No change, I am unable to access my originals (.NEFs) via the HoudahGeo media browser. Only the jpg.-previews are available

Copying GPS coordinates from one jpg to another

I have a qstarz q1300 that I am mostly happy with except for its battery. I was recently on a trip where I could not charge the q1300 as often as necessary, so there were some gaps in its location information.

When I geocoded my photos with houdahgeo, there were some anomalies because of these gaps. Some I corrected by geocoding in iphoto, but there are some others where I would like to copy the coordinates from one jpg file to another.

Can someone recommend a way to do this with houdahgeo or another application?

No exif data on original file

I'm trying to write lat/long data to original photo images. Imported photos and GPX file from my Garmin Oregon. Lat and Long are being calculated and shown in the HoudahGeo columns, but when I try to write the data to the original photos in iPhoto the data is not showing up there. Interestingly enough all the lat long data comes up when I restart HoudahGeo and reload those same images again. Must be getting the data from somewhere, maybe the HoudahGeo project file remembers the data. Sure wish I could get the data onto the original photo exif header. What can I be doing wrong? When the export metadata dialog box comes up, I have selected images only and tag masters box checked. I've tried it with the second box checked as well and still nothing. It has worked for me before. Is there a setting in iPhoto that is blocking the action?

Exif Types

I am trying to edit a Filemaker XML file that imports EXIF data from digital photos. (The original xml file does not include the tags for importing GPS information)

Could anyone let me know what the EXIF tag and type Houdah Geo uses to write the GPS information into a photograph.

Below is the sample of the xml file I'm working with. I pulled the GPS Lat and Long type and tage from the internet but they don't seem to be working. I thought Houdah Geo maybe using custom tags.

Time problem

Hello,

I use the Wintec WBT-201 and HoudahGPS (via Bluetooth) on my mac to look to my recorded tracks in GoogleEarth.
Unfortunatly there is always the wrong time in my files.
The created name looks in this way: "2009-04-13 10/34/11 +0200".
How can I correct the right time zone or is this impossible?
I live in germany, perhaps this info is important.

Answer was "this ist not a MTK based GPS......"

Is there another possiblity to use a Holux 245 ?

Hanging on geocoding - v. 2.3.3

I am attempting to geocode 192 images using 1 gpx file and 2 iphoto event sets. Everytime I begin the bulk geocoding, I see those files visible in the list get their Lat/Long identified, and then the progress hangs until I have to force quit. I left it run over an hour once, but it still kept hanging.

Is there some limitation to how many geocodes can be made at once?

Crash when importing Aperture Project

Reverse Geocoding is going well except for the following.

I have some JPG photos I took on my HTC-Touch Cell-phone stored within Aperture v2.1.4 as a project (Not fantastic photos, but that's where I keep them). They contain no XMP or IPTC segment; only a valid but very rudimentary EXIF segment. When I use the Aperture Project Import function of HoudahGeo, the HoudahGeo reads the files and then promptly crashes. If I export a test master file and try to import it into a HoudahGeo project, it works fine. It only seems to have this behaviour for images from the HTC-Touch Cell-phone.

Here is a key excerpt from the apple crash report.

I can see that the O/S is complaining about an unhandled exception and a 'nil' argument. That's pretty straight-forward. What's really puzzling is that if it were the file contents causing this, I would expect it not to matter whether the file was in Aperture or not. But, I don't know the code internals. Any idea what's actually causing the crash and how to resolve the issue?
